Screwed Retained

A screw-retained crown is a type of dental crown fixed onto an implant using a small screw that passes through the crown into the implant or abutment.

Description

Advantages

• Retrievability: Screw-retained crowns can be easily removed for maintenance, repairs, or implant inspection without damaging the restoration.
• No excess cement: Eliminates the risk of excess cement retention and associated peri-implantitis, making it a cleaner, healthier choice for the peri-implant tissues.
• Better for subgingival restorations: Screw retention avoids complications associated with cement removal in difficult-to-access areas, particularly for posterior or subgingival restorations.

Limitations:

• Visible access hole: The access hole may impact esthetics, especially in the anterior region, although it can be filled with composite material to blend with the crown.
• Angulation limitations: Screw-retained crowns are challenging if the implant is at an unfavorable angle, especially in the anterior region. In such cases, an angled screw channel or custom abutment might be necessary.
• Technique sensitivity: Ensuring a proper seal on the access hole and managing occlusal forces around the screw channel require meticulous attention to technique.
